Generating G-Force

Greedy Pig Roasted

Generosity is Good | Generation G is a trend capturing the growing importance of 'generosity' as a leading societal and business mindset. As consumers become more disillusioned with financial greed and its current consequences for the economy, the emergence of an online-fueled culture of individuals who share, give, engage, create and collaborate in large numbers is receiving recognition. "Me, myself and I" is being ditched by countless individuals. Giving is the new taking and sharing is the new giving. And in this business climate, can you really afford not to spend some time figuring out how to get a little closer to the people you work with and for?
Generation G is not just about giving it all away and for free, being generous doesn't always mean giving away everything you have. There's still a place for the bottom line and profitability, but the scales need adjusting in favour of more consideration for everyone you collaborate with.
Read more about Generation G here.

Creative Tension

Fabric Tension Model

Exhibition of the Century | Researchers at the University of Warwick and the Courtauld Institute of Art have worked together on a project which marries art and architecture with engineering. The project, Tensioned Fabrics in Art and Architecture, is based on work done by the research team led by Professor Wanda Lewis of Warwick's School of Engineering who model the stresses and strains experienced by tensioned fabric enclosures such as the Millennium Dome. The project is in collaboration with Dr Christina Young of the Conservation and Technology Department at The Courtauld Institute who specialises in measuring the physical behaviour of fabric supports such as the canvases of paintings. The results of the study including canvases, model structures and unusual images of the 'strain maps' produced during testing and computation will be on show at the 'Exhibition of the Century' at the Digital Lab, Warwick University until the 26th February. The exhibition will then be on show at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London between the 4th and 18th March.

Mission Possible for Polaroid Pix

The Polaroid camera

New developments over defunct instant film | Long before the digital age, the Polaroid camera was the classic tool for capturing, in an instant, the ordinary, extraordinary and explicit moments of life. Polaroid may have stopped production of its analogue instant film last summer, but a group of aficionados in the Netherlands has bought an old Polaroid factory with plans to bring the technology back into production.
The Impossible Project aims to bring back an innovative analogue material under a new brand name specifically for Polaroid cameras. Impossible b.v. backed by Ilford Photo, has taken on Polaroid's Enschede-based film-production factory, to produce film of two exposure types, each compatible with both the classic SX-70 cameras popular with artists and the more modern 600 series. The project has an experienced team of integral film experts from around the world. Among the team's challenges is retooling and modernizing Polaroid's integral film, as some of its key components are no longer available.
The new owner is the Austrian artist and businessman named Florian Kaps. Mr Kaps, 39, has dedicated the past five years to instant photography. He set up Polanoid.net, the biggest Polaroid gallery on the web, and the first ever Polaroid-only art gallery in Vienna, called Polanoir. Source: Springwise

Nuturing Talent

Designer-makers nurture export growth | A recent study by creative incubator Cockpit Arts has revealed that exports account for 30-40% of designer-makers' business, with the most popular markets being France, Japan and US.

Based on three years of tenant data, analysed by the Cities Institute at the London Metropolitan University, the study also revealed that almost a quarter of makers' business income came from supply of services to interior designers, architects as well as trade to galleries and retail outlets, whilst over a half was direct sales to customers and clients.

Significantly, research indicates that makers nowadays are more businesslike, as whilst three years ago only 13% had business plans, now over 70% were guided by a business plan. Cockpit Arts is the UK's only creative business incubator for designer-makers, currently housing 150 businesses. As a registered charity, it exists to nurture creative talent, from first beginnings through to international success.

The Ecofont from Spranq

Ecofont for Green-minded Typography | A font that that reduces consumption of ink cartridges and toner is now available as a free download for eco-conscious designers. The innovative typeface called the Ecofont has been designed by Dutch creative agency Spranq. Setting out to explore how much of a letter could be removed while maintaining readability, the group found that the best results were achieved using a font in which tiny circles were intentionally left blank in the middle of each line, much like Swiss cheese. The result is based on the Vera Sans, an open source letter, and uses up to 20 percent less ink than traditional fonts, according to Spranq. Available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux, the Ecofont works best in OpenOffice, AppleWorks and MS Office 2007 at the 9 or 10-point size.

Design by Lucian Bernhard

Graphic Design and Illustration heart to heart | Graphic Design and illustration were closely related disciplines in commercial art up until the 1970s, but the branding revolution of the 1980s and strategy based creativity saw a parting of the ways. Partly inspired by American innovators of graphic design and illustration such as Chwast and Glaser a reconcilliation seems at hand from a fresh generation of hybrid graphic designers brimming with energy and talent. The creative spirit of Push Pin Studios lives on with a growing number of graphic designers combining llustrative elements into engaging and visually
